Gillian’s Turner & Townsend journey

Q. Gillian, how long have you been working at Turner & Townsend?

A. I’ve been working here since 2022, primarily at the Brisbane office in Australia. I actually live on the Gold Coast, so I split my time between the Brisbane office and the Gold Coast office, usually spending about two to three days in each location. It’s great to have that variety and flexibility.

Q. What does a typical day look like for you?

A. I mainly work in retail, focusing on cost and commercial management. My typical day includes cost planning, preparing cost estimates and setting project budgets. I also handle report preparation and contract administration, and attend client meetings. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow in the field of cost management.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your role?

A. There are so many things! But mostly I would say it’s the opportunity to work on multiple projects simultaneously. This allows me to develop my skills, especially in communication, since English is not my first language. Additionally, the collaboration with other professionals enhances my job satisfaction and I’m always happy to come to work.

Q. Can you think of a favourite project you’ve worked on? Why does it stand out for you?

A. One of my favourite projects was the flood recovery programme. This project stands out due to its uniqueness and the significant impact it had on the local community.

In early 2022, southern Queensland and northern New South Wales experienced severe flooding. We worked quickly to reopen four flooded stores within five months, which was crucial for the local community. This project was both challenging and rewarding, which was a great combination.

The Turner & Townsend graduate programme stands out for its mentorship, diverse projects and career growth opportunities.

Q. Was the graduate role what you expected?

A. Yes, the graduate role has met my expectations, especially in terms of hands-on experience and learning opportunities.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the level of responsibility and the strong support for professional development. You truly feel like you have a clear career pathway and your progress is taken seriously.
