Port of Aberdeen reaches milestone completion
The UK’s oldest - and now newly renovated - port, Port of Aberdeen, has reached completion of its quayside construction with a £420m makeover of its South Harbour.
Now fully operational, the Aberdeen South Harbour expansion is the largest marine infrastructure project in Trust Port history, cementing its place as Scotland’s largest berthage port.
Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, officially opened South Harbour, which adds an additional 1.5km of deepwater berths (up to a maximum of 15m depth) to the port estate and can accommodate ships up to 300m in length, a significant increase to the port’s previous capability of 165m. It also has extensive heavy-lift zones, and 125,000m2 of flexible laydown space with expansive project areas.
The project, which set out to expand and upgrade the existing port to increase the number of vessels docking at the port, allows accessibility for cruise liners to increase the level of tourism in and around Port of Aberdeen and become a key enabler of Aberdeen’s energy transition, which was started in 2017 with the first phase completing in July 2022.
We have supported the project since 2020, with planning, scheduling and interface management, project controls and reporting, project management and risk management.
Garry Murphy, UK Head of Project Management, Infrastructure, said:
I would like to congratulate everyone who has been involved in the project which has involved over 3.5m work hours in total. The completion of South Harbour concludes the work and signifies a fantastic achievement for Port of Aberdeen.
"As a key member of a wider, multi-disciplinary team, I am incredibly proud of the vital contribution that our people have made in building a trusting relationship with the client, while working collaboratively with the wider project team and contractors to help reach completion. The work done here shows the effectiveness of robust project controls and how important they are to a project’s success."
Bob Sanguinetti, Port of Aberdeen CEO, said:
"Aberdeen’s expanded port promises a vibrant future for energy, trade and tourism across Scotland on the road to net zero, unlocking new jobs and attracting investment to the region."
