Turner & Townsend continues support for the development of North West Cambridge
Turner & Townsend has been appointed by the University of Cambridge Estates Division to lead the preparation and delivery of a new masterplan and planning application for the upcoming phases of the North West Cambridge development.
The first phase of the North West Cambridge development, known as Eddington, has delivered a new neighbourhood for the city – recognised for its strong placemaking through the provision of a school, nursery, shops, community facilities, accessible open spaces and sporting facilities.
The next stage of the development will see the preparation of a new masterplan and planning application on behalf of the University, where Turner & Townsend's focus will remain on crafting a masterplan that meets the evolving needs of the University and the broader community, ensuring a seamless integration of residential, commercial, academic, and communal spaces.
Central to the masterplan’s approach is a commitment to environmentally conscious design, through innovative building typologies and integration of renewable and low-carbon energy systems, complemented with a movement strategy that encourages modal shift away from private car use.
Having served as programme and project managers for this mixed-use neighbourhood since 2009 Turner & Townsend has enjoyed a longstanding role with the University spanning over 15 years in managing the design, consents, and construction works to successfully deliver the first phase. The company's new role builds on that success, amongst comparable placemaking projects it has delivered for other Universities and commercial developers.
The University will be procuring other professional consultants over the following months to help deliver the project, and commencing a series of public consultation events and stakeholder engagement sessions in the lead up to the planning submission for this next phase of works.
Matt Johnson, Head of Development for North West Cambridge, University of Cambridge said:
"The University has played a vital role in establishing a new high quality neighbourhood in a sustainable location at Eddington."
Our continued commitment to delivering at Eddington will retain the values of vibrant placemaking and every-day convenience with additional homes, infrastructure and social facilities that support residents and the wider community living and working in the Cambridge eco-system.
We look forward to working with Turner & Townsend and our wider team, as well as with the local community on the upcoming proposals.
Steve Perkins, Director and Sector Lead for Local Government, said:
We are delighted to be able to continue to support the University of Cambridge in its commitment to creating a neighbourhood that supports the institution’s position on the world stage of academia.
"We’re immensely proud of the role we played in delivering a new sense of place at Eddington and we’re committed to working with the University and its professional team in building on the sound placemaking principles that have, to date, made the development a success.”
