Government gives go ahead for Lower Thames Crossing

The government has granted planning permission for National Highways' A122 Lower Thames Crossing project, aiming to enhance the UK’s critical national infrastructure and drive economic growth.

The major road initiative, which National Highways calls ‘the most significant in a generation’, is an essential aspect of the government's Plan for change and will address persistent congestion at Dartford and enhancing connectivity between the South East, the Midlands and the North.

Spanning over 14 miles, it will connect the A2 in Kent with the A13 and M25 in Essex through the UK's longest road tunnel. This new route aims to alleviate congestion at Dartford by nearly doubling the road capacity across the Thames east of London, ensuring that millions of journeys each year are faster, safer and more reliable.

Since being appointed as the Commercial Partner in 2021, Turner & Townsend has supported the programme by providing integrated cost and commercial services and day-to-day commercial and contract management. Additionally, the company has contributed to the organisational setup and transformation, carbon and sustainability initiatives, project management and procurement services.

James Corrigan, Managing Director, Infrastructure, UK at Turner & Townsend, said:

The Lower Thames Crossing is truly one of the most important infrastructure projects of our time, with the capacity to boost economic growth and change the lives of many, from the local tradesmen and workers employed to carry out the labour, to the communities that will benefit from quicker, safer and more reliable journeys.

“It will also set a new standard for major projects in a net-zero future by scaling up low-carbon construction and leaving a legacy of green spaces and green skills. The government approval is terrific news for National Highways and we are ready to do our part, assisting them to achieve success in implementing this vital project.”
