Major railway improvements delivered in North of England
Network Rail’s Hope Valley rail upgrade project has successfully completed its final phase of work to provide a faster, more reliable, accessible railway between Manchester and Sheffield.
The £145m scheme has delivered several major railway improvements between Manchester and Sheffield including the upgrade of Dore & Totley station, increasing connectivity between Bamford and Hathersage, and completing general track renewals.
The improvements will increase the number of trains that operate between the cities from two fast trains to three fast trains per hour.
The Dore & Totley station upgrade has created a new platform and accessible footbridge with lifts at Dore & Totley Station, a railway loop between Bamford and Hathersage and a new overbridge at Hathersage West, replacing the current foot crossing to improve safety. Signalling improvements have also been made along the line to improve reliability and platform extensions to allow for more carriages on services.
Commissioned in early 2022, Turner & Townsend has supported Network Rail with the delivery of this upgrade by forming part of the integrated team, providing project management, programme management, risk management, as well as cost and commercial management, including specialist contract support.
The successful delivery of this project reinforces Turner & Townsend's partnership with Network Rail and underscores its capability to contribute to significant infrastructure development schemes. This project will provide multiple advantages for the North of England and will enhance passenger connectivity and reliability.
James Corrigan, Managing Director of UK Infrastructure, Turner & Townsend, said:
"We are delighted to have supported Network Rail on these vital railway enhancements which will provide passengers with greater connectivity and an improved service experience."
Rachel Thomas, Project Director for Network Rail said:
I’d like to thank the Turner & Townsend team involved with the Hope Valley project for their help and support, allowing us to successfully deliver this major programme of work.
