Newark’s Liberty International Airport celebrates Terminal A opening after four-year redevelopment
The new one-million-square-foot facility will modernise Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to handle an estimated 13.6 million passengers a year, and provide associated roadway and airside improvements that will help keep communities connected across North America.
We have supported the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s EWR New Terminal A Program Team since 2017. Our people were part of the programme management team for the EWR Terminal A Redevelopment Program, providing project controls, cost, change and contract management services.
In addition, we provided the Port Authority with programme-management services for the Operational Readiness programme, working with the Terminal Operator (Munich Airport New Jersey) to ensure that the customer experience is world-class at the new Terminal A.
The previous Terminal A at Liberty International Airport stood for nearly 50 years and has been reinvigorated to present a world-class passenger experience with 33 departure gates to handle larger aircraft, four new passenger lounges, and an integrated public parking garage with a consolidated rental car centre (CONRAC).
Travellers can now enjoy restaurants and retail space that reflect the local New Jersey character, like Shorepoints Market, Carlito’s Tacos, Smokehouse and KitchenStep, as well as explore inspiring public-art installations like the ‘Forest of Firsts’, which celebrates the Garden State’s pioneering accomplishments in science, literature, energy and film.
Passengers will also benefit from modern airport infrastructure, such as touchless security checkpoints and boarding areas, while enjoying views of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson River.
Luuk van Mourik, Associate Director, said:
Terminal A at Newark’s Liberty International Airport has raised the bar for world-class airport terminals and the overall passenger experience.
"Delivering a brand-new replacement facility to such a high standard has required a real collaborative effort from the entire project team, maintaining an outcome-focused approach to delivery that is already delivering benefits to the local economy, the environment and to the travellers to New Jersey and New York which are even better connected than ever before."
