UEFA EURO 2028 success for UK and Ireland
The UK and Republic of Ireland have won the bid to hold the 2028 European Championships, securing the hosting rights for the prestigious event.
Our host cities, sports and venues team has supported the bid from the outset of the feasibility and planning stage. We worked in collaboration with cross sector colleagues to provide strategic advice, business case development, technical compliance, cost planning and programme assurance to the bid to enable the selection of the final stadia in the bid submission.
One of the key factors in securing the successful bid was the ability of each proposed stadium and host city to meet the strict compliance and hosting requirements set out by UEFA. Ten venues have been proposed and are set to provide the platform for the largest UEFA EURO to date, providing capacity for a record breaking 3m tournament tickets to be made available and an average stadium capacity of 58,000, meaning more fans than ever before will be able to attend matches.
Sustainability has also been central to the bid, with the compact and connected transport plan ensuring over 80 percent of ticket holders will be able to travel to matches by public transport.
The UK and Ireland share a proud reputation as world-leading event destinations and have successfully staged some of the biggest global sporting tournaments, including the recent UEFA Women’s EURO in 2022.
Speaking after the announcement, James Hamilton, Director, Global Host Cities and Sports Venues, said:
The UK and Ireland’s track record of hosting successful major sporting events over many decades means we have the expertise and experience to take this world-class tournament to new heights.
"We are excited about the next stage of preparations for the UEFA EURO’s 2028 and are proud to have supported the successful bid."
