Transformational development
The Port of Aberdeen is Scotland’s largest berthage port and one of the UK’s busiest ports, welcoming around 7,000 vessels every year, supporting operations across a diverse range of industries, including oil and gas, renewables, decommissioning and cargo.
In 2012, the Port identified Nigg Bay as the ideal location to expand its infrastructure to meet the growing demand. The plan would deepen the bay with 1,500m of deep-water quays creating capacity for deeper and wider vessels, as well as 125,000m2 of laydown areas for equipment and supplies.
Robust project controls
Since August 2020, we have supported the South Harbour expansion project with planning, scheduling and interface management, project controls and reporting, project management and risk management.
Following a discovery phase, we deployed a team of experts to develop a comprehensive findings and recommendation report, which was endorsed by the client’s board.
Fit for the future
Port of Aberdeen is the UK’s oldest port, and this vital expansion will ensure its future is just as bright. With Scotland’s aim to deliver greener infrastructure and improve the capacity of its shipping industry, the Port will bring benefits to both the local and national economy, as well as supporting the UK’s energy transition and drive to net zero.
The South Harbour expansion officially opened in September 2023, following a successful phased start to operations. Already attracting new vessels and projects, the expanded Port of Aberdeen is expected deliver a £2.4bn gross value added boost and support 17,500 jobs when it reaches its full potential.
The project provided up to 300 jobs during construction and ongoing operations, and its South Harbour visitor centre welcomed more than 10,000 people to learn about the transformational project.
Investment in the local supply chain was key with £44m awarded to more than 30 Aberdeen/Shire-based contractors between 2020 and 2023.
Keith Young, Engineering Director, Port of Aberdeen, said:
The expanded Port of Aberdeen will play a pivotal role in supporting energy, trade and tourism growth across the region, and Scotland more widely, while supporting increased jobs and investment for decades to come.
"The completion of this nationally significant project reflects the dedication and determination of everyone involved, including Turner & Townsend who were appointed at such a crucial stage of delivery."
