Delivering a workspace to inspire change

ETCA is a dynamic workspace and ecosystem designed to test and scale game changing ideas. The objective was to develop a 5,000m² central hub to serve as the vibrant heart of the campus. Additionally, six office floors spanning 7,000m² were refurbished to offer innovative, flexible working environments that encourage collaboration and creativity.

These transformations aligned with Shell’s stringent sustainability targets, requiring low-carbon solutions at every stage of the project.

This project was carried out with the aim of minimising carbon footprint, focusing on maximising reuse and the use of sustainable materials, including recycling furniture from other Shell locations.

Balancing vision with practicality

In 2022, we were appointed to provide project and cost and commercial management for ETCA, ensuring its ambitious vision became a reality. Managing the refurbishment in a live, multi-tenant environment presented unique challenges. We addressed these with a detailed project schedule to minimise disruption and regular stakeholder coordination meetings.

Our team successfully balanced diverse needs and facilitated practical compromises. By maintaining an on-site presence and establishing a structured review process, we helped progress the project and bridge gaps in local design team representation.

Innovative design and construction methods were used to minimise emissions, supported by our carbon cost calculator. This allowed us to monitor and optimise the project’s carbon footprint in real-time, ensuring we met and exceeded sustainability goals without compromising on quality or functionality.

Leading the energy transition

Sustainability underpins every aspect of ETCA’s design and operation. The newly designed campus has created a space where innovators can come together to work on, and expedite, solutions critical to the global clean energy transition.

The campus is also powered by 4,000 solar panels and Dutch offshore wind farms, significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint and making it a sustainable workspace.

Paul van der Bijl, Portfolio Manager, Shell Real Estate EMEA said:

Turner & Townsend was an integral part of our team during the project, consistently demonstrating strong stakeholder management, creativity and perseverance under pressure.

"We are confident in the successful completion of this transformative project."
