Supporting Pan-African data centre expansion with PAIX

Project overview
Environmental credentials
The BG01 is Brazilian data centre company ODATA’s first project outside its home country; it is a high density, certified Tier III Design data centre spanning around 6,400 sq m.
The data centre was built in just six months, and its construction followed strict standards of quality, safety and respect for the environment. It has implemented the first adiabatic conditioning system (this is a cooling system that uses atmospheric water evaporation to cool the water that passes through the system creating an important saving on energy consumption) in a data centre in Colombia, guaranteeing lower water and energy consumption.
Challenging schedule
ODATA split the project into three phases, and we were appointed at the beginning of the second phase. The client wanted to learn from phase one and receive information and monitoring from the project from an independent source.
The task was to move the project onto a fast-track schedule and set baselines, as well as give recommendations to unsolved issues, while organising all stakeholders and documentation.
The project had been scheduled to be completed by June 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns presented a challenge. Our team developed a new strategy to reschedule the project, and thanks to our cost management advice, we achieved a budget saving of 12 percent.
Future plans
ODATA plans to build further data centres in Colombia, as well as expanding its operations in Latin America. Its Colombian investment so far is around US$20m, employing around 180 people.
“For ODATA the most important factor is how we have built a partnership and integrated team with Turner & Townsend to successfully meet the market requirements.”
