Project overview

What does it take to deliver one of the world's most advanced airport terminals?

When Terminal A at Zayed International Airport opened in November 2023, it marked the end of a ten-year journey to reimagine how Abu Dhabi welcomes the world. Built to support the UAE’s long-term growth, the new terminal significantly increases capacity while raising the bar for passenger experience, operational efficiency and sustainability.

At over 700,000 sqm, this is one of the largest airport terminals in the world. It brings together advanced aviation systems, large-scale commercial and retail space and highly complex building services.

Project story

Setting the project up for success

We began supporting Abu Dhabi Airports in 2013, as work got underway to expand the Midfield Terminal Complex. Our team brought together project management, cost and commercial management, BIM expertise and programme controls through a single, integrated programme management office (PMO).

This created a clear, consolidated view of the programme – improving reporting, supporting stronger decisions and keeping terminal, airside and landside works aligned.

Experts from our global aviation network worked closely with the client throughout, bringing the expertise needed to deliver a project of this scale and complexity. The PMO also guided capital investment decisions, helping the client assess options as the programme moved through key stages.

A terminal build for the future

Terminal A supports Abu Dhabi's long-term economic ambitions while setting new standards for sustainable airport development.

Energy-efficient lighting, advanced cooling and ventilation and a 3 MW on-site solar plant reduce carbon emissions by around 5,500 tonnes each year, helping the emirate move closer to its net-zero goals.

Designed for long-term growth, Terminal A can welcome 45 million passengers a year today, with the flexibility to expand to more than 65 million as demand rises over the next decade
