Transforming the Quai Zurich Campus with Zurich Insurance Group

Project overview
How do you build for creativity and collaboration?
In 2022, Shell set out to repurpose its Amsterdam campus into a shared space where people and ideas could come together to accelerate the shift to clean energy. The result is the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam (ETCA). It's a 5,000m² central hub, supported by modern offices and labs, designed to help startups, corporates and academics collaborate more easily and bring new technologies to market faster.
The project required a careful balance of ambition and practicality – upgrading six office floors, reshaping the campus identity and embedding sustainability throughout.
Delivering in a live environment
Refurbishing an occupied building calls for careful planning, close coordination and regular engagement to keep work moving with minimal disruption.
When Shell appointed us to provide project management and cost and commercial management for ETCA, our team set up on site. From there, we coordinated design development, facilitated conversations on requirements and trade-offs and helped everyone stay aligned as the project progressed. Our hands-on approach ensured decisions were made quickly and the refurbishment stayed on track.
"Turner & Townsend was an integral part of our team during the project, consistently demonstrating strong stakeholder management, creativity and perseverance under pressure."

Portfolio Manager, Shell Real Estate EMEA
Designed for a low-carbon future
Sustainability guided every decision at ETCA. With our carbon cost calculator, we tracked and reduced emissions in real time, while reuse strategies such as repurposing furniture from other Shell sites helped cut embodied carbon. The campus now operates on renewable energy from 4,000 solar panels and offshore wind.
ETCA is more than a building. It’s an ecosystem where collaboration and innovation drive progress in clean energy.
